Davis denied Canada a historic goal. Belgium took the maximum from the minimum

Although Canada last competed at the final stage of the World Cup 36 years ago in Mexico in 1986, John Herdman’s side did not look like a whipping boy against a powerful Belgium. But this is not surprising: the Canadian national team has a talented generation of players, led by stars Alphonso Davis and Jonathan David. And the Canadians qualified for CONCACAF very confidently, leaving behind the strong national teams of Mexico and the USA.

The start of the match confirmed that the Belgian national team will definitely not have an easy walk. The match against Canada for one of the World Cup favorites started with a cold shower. Already in the 8th minute, the referee from Zambia, Gianni Sikazwe, after reviewing the VAR, saw a handball in his penalty area by Yannick Carrasco. The referee’s verdict was carried out by Alphonso Davis, but the leader of the Canadian national team was clearly nervous and could not score the first historic goal of the national team at the World Cup.

It is difficult to say whether the Belgians expected such dexterity from their opponent, but the lightning counterattacks of the Canadians gave them some problems. The North Americans played very simply: after receiving the ball, they did not roll it in the center of the field, but immediately ran into the attack, where the quick-footed Alphonso Davis and Jonathan David, entering the operational space, struck at the goal. Thibaut Courtois entered the game much more often than his colleague in the role – Milan Boryan. However, it must be admitted that without Romelu Lukaku, who will miss the first two matches of the tournament due to an injury, the Red Devils created very little in attack.

But it was like that until a certain time. The Belgians, it seems, lulled the vigilance of the opponent and a minute before the end of the regular time of the half, they launched a striking attack. Vertonghen sent Batshuayi into a striking position from his half of the field with a split pass – and he made full use of his chance. 1:0 – Belgium turned the game around before the break, which was clearly not according to their script.

After the break, the picture on the field did not change much. The Canadians rushed forward, flying through the middle of the field like lightning, and at the first opportunity they hit Courtois’ goal. In turn, the Belgians tried to play the ball, but in the final phase of the attack, Martinez’s wards lacked an accurate pass.

The Canadians advanced in large forces, sometimes exposing their own rear. Batshuayi, of course, tried to replace Lukaku at the point, but Belgium’s top scorer was of course missing. Even Hazard was a shadow of his Chelsea days – and Martinez replaced the captain, who was not particularly memorable.

At the end of the match, Belgium competently took the game away from their goal, not allowing the opponent to make a final assault. In general, the Canadians looked no worse than the opponent in the game, and they far surpassed the Belgians in terms of XG. But Roberto Martinez’s team managed to make the most of the minimum. Canada will try to score its first goal at the World Cup in other matches of the tournament.
