The upper and lower houses of the Parliament of Uzbekistan supported President Shavkat Mirziyev’s decision to introduce a state of emergency in the autonomous republic of Karakalpakstan, located in the north-west of the country. This was reported by the press service of the Legislative (lower) chamber of Olii Majlis.

A state of emergency has been introduced until August 2.

On Friday, protests began in the capital of the autonomy, the city of Nukus, due to amendments to the Constitution of Uzbekistan.

According to the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan, “in order to prevent the violation of public order and to stop the commission of various offenses by citizens, the forces and means of law enforcement agencies were used.”

In the meantime, scary videos are published on the network, which show that the streets are covered in the blood of protesters.

On July 2, the parliament, the government and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Karakalpakstan issued a joint statement. It reported that the law enforcement officers had detained a group of organizers of the riots, who were accused of trying to take over the authorities of the region.

It is worth noting that protests in the Republic of Karakalpakstan broke out after the authorities’ decision to amend the country’s Constitution.

Uzbekistan wants to secure the autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan forever, prohibiting this autonomy from leaving the country, as the Russian Federation did after the annexation of Crimea.

Thus, it is proposed to remove the reference to the sovereignty of Karakalpakstan from the constitution. Also, in the new version of the basic law, there is no statement that “the sovereignty of the Republic of Karakalpakstan is protected by the Republic of Uzbekistan.”

We will remind that the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, thanks to the changes to the Constitution, can “zero” according to Putin’s model, having received the right to run for the next two terms, to which, according to the current legislation, he no longer had the right.

We would like to add that the constitution of federal Russia, which Uzbekistan is similar to in other changes, does not allow the subjects of the federation to leave the Russian Federation. Article 65 of the current Basic Law of the Russian Federation refers only to the adoption of new subjects, and does not mention the possibility of withdrawal.
