The international community is urged to react to the intentions of the Russian Federation regarding “referendums” with new sanctions and the supply of weapons to Ukraine.
World leaders condemn Russia’s intentions to hold so-called referendums in the occupied territories of Ukraine on joining the Russian Federation. They emphasize that their results will not be recognized.
In particular, as Zeit Online writes, Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz, during a conversation with journalists in New York, where the 77th session of the UN is taking place, called “referendums” on joining the occupied territories of Ukraine to the Russian Federation unacceptable.
“It is quite clear that these fictitious referendums are unacceptable,” Scholz said, adding that they are not covered by “international law and agreements reached by the international community.”
US President Joe Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, stressed during a briefing that Russia will use these referendums as a basis for annexing territory – now or in the future.
“Tomorrow morning the President of the United States will deliver a speech at the United Nations, this will be his annual speech, in which he will describe American leadership and how to confront Russia’s undisguised and unjustified invasion of Ukraine. We know that these referendums will be manipulated. We know that Russia will use these disgraceful referendums as a basis for annexing these territories, now or in the future. If that happens, the US will never recognize the annexation of any part of Ukraine. We and our partners will do everything we can to make Russia pay for this and provide historic support to Ukraine. We “We know that President Putin will probably announce a mobilization that reflects his war in Ukraine. These are not the actions of a confident state, this is not an indicator of strength – on the contrary, and the United States and its allies will provide the necessary assistance to the Ukrainian people,” he said.
Prime Minister of Estonia Kaia Kallas
the intention of the Russian Federation to hold pseudo-referendums in the occupied territories of Ukraine will have the opposite effect for Russia.
Russia keeps using blackmail and illegally tries to take what doesn't belong to it.— Kaja Kallas (@kajakallas) September 20, 2022
Actions like this will have the opposite effect and rally our support to Ukraine. More military aid, more sanctions against the agressor, holding Russia accountable for its crimes. 2/2
“Such actions will have the opposite effect and rally our support for Ukraine. More military aid, more sanctions against the aggressor, holding Russia accountable for crimes,” she is convinced.
Kallas emphasized that the results of the fake vote will not be recognized.
“The scenario of the occupiers in action. As Russia promotes fake referendums in the occupied territories of Ukraine, let me say this loud and clear: we will never admit this. Ukraine has every right to take back its territory. Donetsk, Luhansk, Crimea are all Ukraine,” – Kallas wrote on her Twitter.
Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Edgars Rinkevičs
the international community to respond to the intentions of the Russian Federation with new sanctions and the supply of weapons to Ukraine.
Apparently #Russia is moving ahead with organising fake referenda in the occupied territories of #Ukraine, international community must reject this move, more sanctions must follow and Ukraine must get more weapons to liberate its territory, we must say no to Russian blackmail— Edgars Rinkēvičs (@edgarsrinkevics) September 20, 2022
“The international community must reject this move, there must be new sanctions, and Ukraine must receive more weapons to liberate its territory. We must say no to Russian blackmail,” the minister emphasized.
Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance Jens Stoltenberg
, which NATO will consider illegitimate “referendums”. According to him, this is “further escalation”.
Sham referendums have no legitimacy & do not change the nature of #Russia’s war of aggression against #Ukraine. This is a further escalation in Putin’s war. The international community must condemn this blatant violation of international law & step up support for Ukraine. pic.twitter.com/NdcN3tO6Sy— Jens Stoltenberg (@jensstoltenberg) September 20, 2022
“The international community must condemn this flagrant violation of international law and strengthen support for Ukraine,” Stoltenberg is convinced.
During his visit to New York for the UN General Assembly, the President of Poland Andrzej Duda said that the referendums organized by Russia in the occupied territories of Ukraine are worthless. Poland does not recognize their results, he emphasized.
“They are worthless. The truth is that the result is determined in the Kremlin, not by voting,” he told reporters, Reuters writes.
There were also reports in the mass media that allegedly against the background of statements about the preparation of “referendums”, French President Emmanuel Macron invited talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but was refused.
Later, Macron himself called the organization of “referendums” in Russian-controlled Ukrainian territories cynicism and provocation. According to him, this whole process is a travesty.
“If the idea of a referendum in Donbas was not so tragic, it would be funny,” said the French president.
He also added that France will continue to supply weapons to Ukraine, and “referendums” will not have legal consequences.
At the same time, the French president also emphasized that he is looking forward to a conversation with Putin in the coming days.
“Referendum” in “LPR”, “DPR” and Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions: what you should know
As UNIAN wrote, the occupiers planned to hold a fake vote on the territory of the “LPR”, “DPR”, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions of Ukraine from September 23 to 27. It is reported that voting in referendums will probably be both in-person and absentee – by mail.
The occupiers claim that they will announce the official results of the pseudo-voting on September 28 or 29, “after which the DPR and LPR can send an official request to join Russia.”
A day earlier, the leader of the “DPR” Denys Pushylin turned to the leader of the “LPR” Leonid Pasichnyk with a proposal to join forces to prepare for a pseudo-referendum on the inclusion of the occupied territories of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine into the Russian Federation.
Gauleiter Volodymyr Saldo, who currently heads the occupation administration in the Kherson region, also announced the holding of a “referendum” on joining the Russian Federation. A similar announcement was made by the head of the fake administration of the Zaporizhzhia region, Yevhen Balytskyi.
The Central Electoral Commission of the Russian Federation is going to organize polling stations for “referendums” in the “DPR”, “LPR”, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions on the territory of the Russian Federation, said deputy head of the commission Mykola Bulayev.
The head of the Luhansk Oblast Military Administration, Serhiy Gaidai, believes that if Russia organizes and holds a “referendum” in the newly occupied territories of the Luhansk Oblast, it will open the way to general mobilization in Russia.
