The German parliament could not approve the provision of heavy weapons to Kyiv – the coalition and the “left” factions interfered.
The German parliamentarians failed to vote the day before for the proposal of the opposition CDU / CSU bloc on the immediate supply of tanks and other Western-style armored vehicles to Ukraine. It is reported by the n-tv channel.
The document proposed for voting is called “Defending peace and freedom in Europe – resolutely supporting Ukraine with heavy weapons now.” It proposes to grant permission for the export to Ukraine of battle tanks, armored personnel carriers and other heavy weapons from industrial stocks.
Deputies of the “traffic light coalition” and members of the “left” faction prevented an immediate decision in parliament. The CDU/CSU proposal has been referred to the Foreign Affairs Committee for discussion, which will significantly delay the decision.
During the discussion, some deputies of the ruling coalition supported the initiative of the opposition. The MP from the “free democrats” Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmerman called for the supply of German tanks.
“In the current military situation, in which the Ukrainian army is gradually reclaiming its territories, we must transfer at least Fuchs armored personnel carriers and Marder infantry fighting vehicles. And if the situation so requires, then perhaps a Leopard battle tank,” she said.
It should be noted that it was previously announced that Germany for the first time since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine will transfer armored vehicles to the Armed Forces of Ukraine – 50 Dingo armored vehicles.
In addition, German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht previously announced plans to supply Ukraine with another batch of military equipment.
