Yuriy Shukhevych was the son of Roman Shukhevych, commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA).

In the 89th year, a dissident, people’s deputy of the 8th convocation, Hero of Ukraine, son of the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) Roman Shukhevych, Yuriy Shukhevych, died.

This was announced by the mayor of Lviv Andriy Sadovyi in Telegram.

“At the age of 89, Yuriy Shukhevych, Hero of Ukraine, dissident, member of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group, passed away into eternity. Eternal memory to the great Ukrainian,” he wrote.

According to media reports, Shukhevych died on the night of November 22. He spent the last minutes of his life in Germany, where he was undergoing treatment.

Who is Yuri Shukhevych

Shukhevych was born on March 28, 1933 in the village of Oglyadiv, Lviv region.

He was a well-known Ukrainian politician, dissident, People’s Deputy of Ukraine of the VIII convocation, a member of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group and spent 28 years in prisons and camps in the USSR as a political prisoner.

In 1990, he organized and until 1994 headed the UNA-UNSO (Ukrainian National Assembly – Ukrainian People’s Self-Defense).

In August 2006, President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko awarded Yuri Shukhevych the title of Hero of Ukraine.
