He also called the fact that Russia retains the right of veto to be nonsense.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia should not participate in any UN votes on its aggression.
As he noted in his speech at a meeting of the UN Security Council, it is necessary to restore justice within the United Nations, since the Russian Federation impedes the work of the Security Council itself.
“Finally, justice must be restored within the UN structures themselves: a terrorist state should not participate in any votes on its aggression, its terror. This is a dead end when the one who caused the war, when the one who is responsible for terror blocks any an attempt by the UN Security Council to fulfill its mandate,” the head of state stressed.
He also added that it is “nonsense” that the right of veto is reserved for someone who “carries a criminal war.”
“We need to get the world out of this impasse. It is absolutely possible. The world should not be held hostage by one international terrorist,” Zelensky said.
UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine: key moments
On November 23, 2022, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky initiated the urgent convening of the UN Security Council due to a massive Russian missile attack on Ukrainian cities.
During the meeting, US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said that targeted Russian rocket attacks on Ukrainian critical infrastructure facilities are a shameful escalation of the war. She noted that such a strategy of Russia is “inhuman”.
At the same time, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the UN Geng Shuang called on Ukraine and Russia to start negotiations. According to him, the parties should “show restraint so that their actions do not intensify the confrontation.”
